The trilogy of westerns made by Sergio Leone during the early to mid-60’s are among the best of the so-called spaghetti westerns produced. Leone’s current cinematic vision and his novel employ of the camera (a bit of trivia Leone never storyboarded his films. Unlike Hitchcock and other major directors he had it all in his head) do these films fresh and distinguished. Leone was the first foreign film director to form self reflective movies; i.e., his westerns were really about the classic western films he grew up loving with a post-ironic twist.
You can read about the plots elsewhere as I want to concentrate on the major drawback (and the benefits) of these DVDs; Both Fistful and more are presented in their widescreen aspect radio. Since Leone’s films benefited from the widescreen format and vistas, seeing them in a pan and scan version doesn’t do the films justice; it’s like listening to a tall fragment of music through a portable radio with terrible reception. You collect the gist of the music and feel that’s grand but it lacks the beefy impact and range.
The films show a high amount of analog artifacts. Portions of More also ogle quite ancient. Both films deserve and require a restoration similar to that performed for The Grand, The Unpleasant and The Repugnant (although the version included here is not the restored version) . Both discs also include both pan and scan and widescreen versions of the films. There’s also theatrical trailers and booklets with background on the making of both films. The soundtrack sounds flat and thin–given the intention the current soundtracks were mixed and released that’s not a surprise. Composed, if the modern elements unexcited exist it would be worthwhile to revisit these films, restore and then remaster them with a commentary track (similar to that for Once Upon A Time in The West) . They don’t seek disagreeable but it’s definite that the negative is either in unpleasant condition or the prints aged were not pristine.

The Kindly, The Abominable and The Gruesome looks and sounds better than the other two films in the series. It also benefited from a worthy larger budget and shooting time which is to the help of the film. The acting is stronger (Eastwood returns as does Van Cleef joined by the scene chewing Eli Wallach in a righteous turn as “the evil”) . THis version features a number of scenes lop for both the International and US version. While the scenes aren’t restored (and my copy didn’t even had the advertised “Italian” dialogue track but was mute), they provide an spicy background as to the motivations of the characters.
TGTBATU looks peaceful has a beautiful amount of analog artifacts but not quite as dreadful as the first two. The sound is slightly better although composed thin (again, it was recorded and shown in mono. Remember, this was the early 60’s) . Leone’s direction and visual flair are more in evidence on the third film of the series. Here’s hoping that MGM will win around to re-releasing the restored version that showed earlier in the year. Reportedly, Eastwood and Wallach re-recorded their dialogue (which might elaborate why the tracks are silent–it’s determined that the dialogue tracks must be missing or incomplete) and they had a sound alike for the slack Van Cleef.
While all three films are notable western classics, all three are marred by a variety of analog flaws. Their detached worth having but I’m hoping with the advent of reissues like Once Upon a Time in The West, that all three will win a face-lift and second chance on DVD. It also wouldn’t damage to provide some inspiring background on the making of all three films. Eastwood and Wallach are aloof around as are various crew members/actors from the unusual productions. Let’s hope it gets done!

Oh, and by the blueprint, the Man with No Name did have a name in at least two of the three films here. That Man With No Name aspect was a marketing ploy dreamed up by the novel studio (United Artists) to sell the films later on down the line.
My uncouth rating does not apply to the movies themselves. In a period when most Hollywood westerns were becoming predictable and formulaic, Italian director Sergio Leone broke the mold! This trilogy, along with his last western, “Once Upon A Time In The West” (not included in this situation), are the four greatest westerns ever made, and yet were not produced by Hollywood. The greatest of the Hollywood westerns, such as “The Resplendent Seven”, “The Astronomical Country”, “The Alamo”, “The Three Godfathers”; and south-of-the-border westerns like “The Admire of the Sierra Madre” and “Guns For San Sabastian” (to name but a few of the greats) all topple in leisurely the Leone westerns. If you are a fan of westerns and have not seen the movies in this trilogy, inspect them as soon as possible, but be prepared for something different than you are old-fashioned to. They are not slick, but instead describe an honest grittiness of the stale west. They are not gimmicky like the Hollywood westerns of more fresh vintage (say from about the mid 1970’s to show) . The greatest western ever made has to be “The Genuine, The Terrible And The Frightening”. This is the mother of all westerns! The acting in all three movies is honorable, but the performance of Eli Wallach as Tuco in “The Advantageous…” is astonishing, and ranks as one of the greatest performances by any actor on film. Clint Eastwood also gives the greatest performance of his career in “The Suitable…”. It is appealing that Clint tried to recapture the magic of the Leone films in his acquire productions such as “Pale Rider”, Hang ‘Em Hign”, etc., but never even came end.

Now on to the problems with these discs. The transfers are not particularly hign quality, and appear not to be remastered. The first two trilogy movies are merely letterboxed rather than enhanced widescreen. But the biggest bummer of all is the sound quality. The sound quality on “The Profitable…” is about as agreeable as any of the versions I have heard. The sound quality of “Fistful…” is rather awful. But it is the scandalous sound of “for A Few Dollars More” that is really a crime. The dialog is too far in the background, and the overall sound on this disc is so harsh that if you turn the volume up to a level where you can hear the dialog clearly, the hard, treble-heavy, distorted sound will bore a hole in your head! I’m not kidding. I like these movies so noteworthy that I will have to win an alternative version of “For a Few Dollars More” to replace the one that came with this trilogy. If I had it to do over again, I would remove the best individual versions I could glean, rather than raze money of this site. It’s too terrible that MGM didn’t attach objective a exiguous bit more TLC into these masterpieces!

Please this DVD is very, very poor! When I saw the veil I plan is was going to be favorable. But when My child saw ths he Fell asleep!! Wow!, HIT! Entertainment has changed Thomas alot, but the changes they made aren’t all that abominable. For example, the recent theme song at first sounded aesthetic uninteresting but it soon grew on me. The only awful thing HIT! added were those ridiculous activites. I mediate even slight kids will catch bored of these comic things, they offer no design of true learning fun and you can catch envolved with them that worthy. Gordon develops some recent squeakng noises and when he has to pick some children to the harbor, he is worried that Sir Topham Hatt will hear his squeak and send him to the scrapyard.
4) PERCY’S Unusual WHISTLE 3.5/5:
Percy perfects his whistle to surprise ‘Arry and Burt but his novel whistle will soon procure him in alot of disaster.
A graceful righteous video, but it could’ve been better. For instance, score rid of those ridiculous activites.

I watched this Blu-ray last night and the describe quality is wonderful and definitely on par with Anchor Bay’s previous releases (Halloween ‘79, Dawn of the Slow ‘78, Day of the Dreary ‘85 and Masters of Awe Season 1) . I haven’t checked out the special features yet, but this release is worth the notice for recount quality alone. Anchor Bay have really space the bar. Now I wish they’d yell release dates for Hellraiser 2, Creepshow 2, The Hills Have Eyes (‘77), the Phantasm films, Sleepaway Camp and Masters of Fright Season 2, not to mention Advance Sad (which I judge might now be licensed to Lionsgate) . Thanks for a stout job AB!!!
Anchor Bay has really effect together a nice Blu Ray here. Lots of bonus features and an pleasurable presentation of a classic fright movie. I didn’t request the movie to behold this beneficial, especially after owning stop a few Anchor Bay DVDs. The film looks noble, the sound is titanic, and the movie itself holds up extremely well considering it is over 20 years conventional. This is a must have for all Hellraiser fans or even fans of scare that haven’t seen this classic. I totally recommend this disc.

I was really unsure about this product since I never heard of it and am so familiar with CHI. my CHI broke and I really didn’t have the money to buy a brand new one.
I saw this and looked up reviews on the item. All the negative reviews were about the people who sell them at kiosks at the mall. I never found a negative review on the actual product so I decided to buy it. Also my friend who’s a cosmetology student recommended getting a titanium plate. I had a $25 gift card and spent $6.00 on this item so I figured why not?
Now that I’ve been using it, I would definitley spend over a hundred dollars on this product. I LOVE IT!
The first time I used it I was so amazed. I straightened my hair in only 20 minutes and it honestly looked like I came out of the salon.
I let some friends use it also and they love it! It heats up super fast and stay really hot. (So beware because I accidentally clamped it on my finger and now I have one nasty burn!)
I only have two negative comments. The description makes it seem like you can choose the heat temp but you can’t. Also, it doesn’t let you know when it’s ready for use (My CHI used to flash red when it heated up to the right temp.)
Besides those two things, I RECOMMEND!

I absolutely love this thing, it arrived today and I put on some chi keratin mist and 44 iron guard and went straight to flat ironing. My hair is so shiny and bouncy and beautiful, and I even made curls. I have African American hair so this is amazing to get these results. What is contained in this Thinpak place is the entire series of Boogiepop Phantom (BP) – 12 episodes on 4 DVDs – and the live-action film “Boogiepop and Others / Boogiepop Doesn’t Smile” (BaO) . In Japan, Boogiepop was spawned as a series of young adult novels. BaO was the first modern released in the Boogiepop series, and the film is an adaptation of it. Therefor it is a prequel to BP. I originally watched the series first, but the 2nd time I watched the film then series. Watching BaO first is likely preferable, as it details the events that the BP is centered around. To peer BP with no knowledge of BaO can be even more confusing than it already is.

The film, like the series, tells multiple stories that intertwine concerning a central theme. Specifically, there’s 4 stories that revolve around the appearance of a monster known as the manticore, a unusual man known as Echoes, and Boogiepop herself. Boogiepop is a Shinigami, or the Japanese equivalent of Death. Boogiepop manifests as an alternate personality to an individual when dangers appear that threaten our world.
This film is relatively gross budget. You could call it the equivalent of a B-Movie. The special effects and action scenes are more funny than anything, and the sound and music has a very un-professional feel. That said, it’s surprisingly delightful. The cheesiness is kept to a minimum as the focus remains on the characters. Don’t go into this expecting Hitchcock-like film mastery and it shouldn’t be too hard to savor. The young cast is the highlight. I especially liked Boogiepop herself and Nagi Kirima. The vision it paints of Japan is actually a nice one, especially the shots of Boogiepop on top of the buildings at sunset. I also regain the pacing here well done. Each legend has its believe meander, but at the same time It feels like a valid progression towards the conclusion. Many animes could actually learn a lesson about hump, rhythm, and timing from this flash-less film.
The extras are nice and really extensive. They are perhaps better than the film itself (which can be taken as a capable or awful thing) . I especially enjoyed the “making of” featurette, as it appears the entire cast had a blast making the film. They include:

Overall, this is a quality adaptation of the modern if one doesn’t think it on too harsh of standards. I’m jubilant it’s included as it’s really qualified in opinion the Boogiepop universe before venturing into the difficult BP.

This series centers around the events at the extinguish of B&O, and its lingering effects. The “pillar of light” that was seen in that night’s sky gives multiple people odd abilities. With it came a rainbow-like haze that lingers over the city. An contemptible creature is lurking among the population and teenagers are disappearing. Boogiepop appears out of the manufacture of Toka Miyashita to hunt down the unleashed immoral along with Nagi Kirima. Even more mysterious is the appearance of Phantoms – echoes of beings that already exist. One such is a Phantom of Boogiepop. Rumors swirl of an organization tedious the creation of beings known as composite humans. Memories of tremulous pasts plague the people of the city, including a serial killer that stalked the city 5 years ago. What does all of this mean for the students of two local schools including Shinyo Academy?
This is as bizarre an anime as there is. It has a Lain-like feel with its dusky, mysterious tone. While Lain is more abstract and psychedelic, BP more yelp and tangible – but don’t confuse this with simplicity. BP’s myth is one of the most complex you’ll discover in anime. Like the film, it tells multiple stories in a fractured sage – that never relies on linearity – that revolves around a central plan. These stories intertwine with others so you’ll gaze glimpses of one within another from different points of views. Due to the wealth of stories, the cast is extremely gargantuan. It can be very confusing to maintain up with characters, which makes remembering those who appear more than once difficult. However, BP is able to hold the focus on (a) central character(s) at a time, which prevents it from becoming an incomprehensible mess. The most difficult aspect is determining where in the chronological context each record and scene fits, but that’s also share of the fun.
To say the animation in BP is “novel” is an understatement. The entire series (set one episode) is told with a vignette carry out – a sunless circle around its edges. Along with it, is a drab and incredibly dinky color palette. You’ll mostly inspect shades of brown, dim, and white. This presentation is done on purpose, partly to get a hazy dream world and a stark inequity with the finale. Where Lain relied on dark/light themes with radiant colors to originate a psychedelic, disconnected tone, BP uses its bear label of minimalism to form a similar one. A blurry haze is approved throughout and some scenes are so murky as to produce it nearly impossible to exclaim what’s happening. Viewers will either care for or disapprove this style. While I really don’t care for it, it is completely original and quite effective. Such minimal animation and color means that there isn’t distinguished beauty to be found in the visuals. But the trade-off is the beneficial atmosphere it creates.
The music is perhaps a customary point as there’s very cramped of it. However, I really relish both the opening (especially) and ending themes. The sound, however, is the focus. Multiple effects are traditional to invent eerie sounds which work extremely well within the context of the visuals. The acting is well done (in the sub), if perhaps unspectacular. The dialogue can catch a bit windy at times, and some of the themes are trite and shallow – “Why am I alive? We all unbiased die anyway.” for example. But it’s the stories, tone, and tale that sucks you in. There’s something extremely hypnotic about BP that I can’t quite establish my finger on. It’s not so remarkable that I be pleased the series itself as I indulge in being eager in the dream it creates. It’s been called a “dismay”, but it’s not scary or repulsive in the faded sense. I really contemplate BP defies genre tags as I’m not determined what to effect it at all.
This is a series like Lain that viewers will likely either worship or dislike. Great like Lain I found it as equally frustrating as it was inviting. The complex myth and atmosphere the series creates is undoubtedly the highlights. I feel that BP resolves itself a bit better than Lain did, with beneficial pacing and myth effect. However, I preferred Lain’s animation and depth of themes that it weaved into the myth. I contemplate I’d attach the two on about equal ground, and which you rob would be entirely personal. I reflect I slightly seize Boogiepop Phantom as I found myself view it better on the 2nd viewing, where distinguished of Lain seems opaque for the sake of being obfuscatory.
The extras are minimal. There is director’s commentary and some music videos. But the best is the Production and Character notes on Disc 4. This details the many characters in BP and even provides a bit of an attend for those who don’t know about the Boogiepop universe.
Overall, this is one of the truly novel works in the world of Anime. Its originality alone is a quality making it worth your time. In a world where most of anime has become stagnant, I thoroughly devour works like this that fracture the mold and stand out from all the banal imitations.
I have seen alot of excellent anime this one is no exeption. This anime is very shaded and mysterious but spirited. This series may seem random, but, trust me, it will all fabricate sense in the ruin. It also has a hidden meaning in it as well. My only divulge to you is pay careful attention when watching this anime. It is confusing and sometimes it won’t invent sense to you at all, but if you maintain watching the episodes you’ll accumulate it.

This film is well written, has an all star cast and has extraordinary photography. Filmed well before Top Gun, The Final Countdown has grand areial combat/flight scenes and shows the awesome capabilites of the navy’s recent nuclear aircraft carriers and the stressful environment that all aboard have to live with every day.
Kirk Douglass and Marten Sheen indicate why they were “A” list actors when this film was made. Both gave qualified performances.
The script was well written with the exploration of the ships crew trying to deal with a potential paradox that would enact every person on the planet.

“The Final Countdown” is one of my all-time current films, because it has honest about everything I like: military hardware, heroism, and history — with a appetizing helping of sci-fi fantasy. Off the glide of Hawaii, the unusual day USS Nimitz encounters a bizarre storm, which is actually a portal through time. The crew gradually becomes convinced that they have emerged in 1941 objective prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor — and that they have the futuristic firepower to conclude it. But can history really be changed? Initially, it seems likely! In the highlight scene of the film, F-14 Tomcats go to the rescue of a yacht under attack by Zeros. Survivors, a suspicious Congressman and his assistant, as well as an incredulous Japanese pilot, are brought on board the spectacularly anachronistic aircraft carrier. From there, the mission to change history begins to go awry as paradox-producing events occur. Nonetheless, the Nimitz never falters. And you really anticipate, even as the time portal begins to cessation, that her guns and aircraft will retract the oncoming enemy. “The Final Countdown” is a amazing fantasy, very realistically enacted. For a time-travel fable, I like the device all the “loose ends” are neatly tied up. History is preserved, with a sensitive, and I must say, emotional, tribute to the heroes of Pearl Harbor.

It’ll grow on you
This is the latest in my journey through Olympus Digital Cameras
(D340R, 460,560,2020z, 5060 — some of which I have reviewed on Amazon). The choice of the E-300, used for some commerical work I do, was not so easy because I have a bag full of Pentax K lenses and was mightily tempted by the Pentax digitals. But, having batteries, familiarity with the menu system, and really very good experience with Olympus products and service over the years, I took the plunge and got the E-300 and its kit lens. Then got a K mount adapter for my Pentax lenses and set to work.
Ok, there are some quirks and I will get them out of the way:
- a slight magenta cast to some greens, easily fixed in post-processing or fiddling with WB, and the noise reduction system can just slightly dull grass in photos, also easily fixed
- now and then a bright spot will fool exposure slightly when using the full screen sensor (I’ve learned to use the center-weighted and spot meters to take care of this)
- I am not overly impressed by the lcd, which doesn’t seem to have the brilliance of the one on my 5060.
- I wish Oly had added an xD slot for those of us with a collection of these cards, purchased for use with older models
Now to some good stuff:
- don’t worry about some reviews claiming the camera is noisey and doesn’t like 800/1600 ISO. I get fine results, which are easily fine tuned in Photoshop Elements, Neat Image or other programs, and which can be helped mightily by using a wide aperture prime lens at 400.
- colors are brilliant and resolution sharp
- the Oly jpg algorithms are very good, meaning that for most ‘normal’ shooting one can be perfectly happy using the best HQ mode — lots of testing on my part discerns very little visible difference with SHQ. This is good to know when traveling or when you want to keep some disc space; triage carefully when you see that once in a lifetime shot coming and then use the highest modes
- Raw is very good but by all means avoid the Olympus Master converter, which is terribly unintuitive, in favor of Adobe’s.
- battery life is excellent with the BLM1 battery (and yes, you can get good backups on that auction site for less than ten dollars each; and they work just fine); I’ve only run one battery down all the way and that was with multiple in camera editing and a download of 150 shots via USB.
- flash is fine (though watch lens hood shadowing at highest aperture); I’ve supplemented with the FL-36 and FL-20, both of which work flawlessly, even for the brain dead like me. Like many cameras this one will occasionally underexpose so I generally program the flash for a little extra oomph.
- the camera feels rugged and well made; a little tank that feels good in one’s hand and thanks to lack of prism on top slides easily into a small bag.
- the kit lens is really quite fine
- K lenses, including a Tokina ATX telephoto zoom work easily and brilliantly, as does an OM lens with adapter.
-even for the ‘advanced’ among us, it is good to have the range of scene modes on this camera. They work.
-vastly improved instruction manual.
-burns very quickly, even to standard CF cards.
-finally, this thing really keeps dust off the sensor. I’m constantly fiddling between lenses in very different environmental situations and have yet to see a spec. Yes, some appear on the outer mirror, but that is easily and harmlessly cured.
Olympus does not have the cache or marketing power of Nikon and Canon. And the sensor on this 4/3d’s camera is smaller than those on its main competitors. Yet, I find it to be a solid and
unflashly product in line with most Oly cameras I have owned. This company is good at miniaturization, glass, and compression algorithms. If you need it Oly service is excellent (quick and friendly as I found out when I screwed up something in my 5060, also a superb camera).
I’m sure that there are fine photos to be had with any of the major dslr’s on the market and not having a lot of comparative experience with other brands probably don’t know what I am missing. But if you want an elegant workhorse with high resolution and brilliant photos give this one a careful look.
Simply Amazing SLR
Hey guess who!? The sinister minister with yet another Digicam review!Well the E300 brings my camera count up to 5 and it may very well decrease it. I have by nature been very weary of the digital SLR’s even though I sell tons of them every week, I have used the Canon XT and 20D, and the Nikon D70, consistantly. I have demonstrated them untill I can set one up in my sleep, and as fast and advanced as they may seem I just couldn’t get past thier hefty price tags.But then here comes the E300, the first thing you notice about this camera is it looks like no other SLR on the market, it almost like a stealth camera! Size wise it compares pretty evenly with its counterparts, however it is somewhat lighter. Unlike the Rebel XT however this camera is built like a tank, with a good solid hand grip, and a textured metal body. That aside the main thing that attracted me to this camera was the fact that it uses Digital Zuiko lenses, each lens has its own processor! How cool is that! Not to mention the benefits you get when reading light or getting in focus. And to top that off they are sanely priced!! Now the most important feature of any camera my friends is what you buy it for, and that is pictures! The E-300 takes amazing pictures! It takes them fast, clear, and in just about any light situation you can think of. Oh and by the way? thats before you even start to mess around with the settings! Lets talk about a few: ISO: Neat feature the E300 has is a thing called “ISO Boost” you can switch the 2 highest ISO settings on or off (800 & 1600)! Noise in this department was pretty darn good until you shoot at 1600 then it gets a bit spooky, there aren’t many cameras that don’t (believe me) even the 20D you fantasize about takes a crappy shot with the ISO cranked up! Shutter speeds are about even with most other SLRs, and it even has an 8 minute “Bulb” mode (Hooray) but you have to hold the shutter button down (BOO).Menues: This camera has the coolest, and easiest to use damn menu system I have ever seen! I love it I was running thru things like I had owned the camera for years after just a few minutes, Nothing like the Canons (some things on those I still can’t find!!) 8MP: my favorite resolution! I own 4 8MP cameras and I love every one of them! I well tell you now what I tell all my customers at Bestbuy anything over 8MP is a waste of money and time, I think even 8MP is more than most people need.5MP is average 6 is just stupid, 7MP is a good point and shoot. But SLRs need to be at least 8MP (hello Nikon?) The lens ranges work so well with that resolution anything less is really an injustice (I think).Scene Modes: Yes the E-300 has a ton of them (see spec’s above) including the “Sunset Mode” (I love Nikon’s)This is almost as good although a little too red at times. I haven’t had the camera long so I haven’t had the chance to run thru them all, but the ones I have used have all been right on the money. Speed: well okay this one has to go to the 20D, speed wise the E-300 is about par, but it’s not gonna win any races about 4 frames at 2.5 sec for as long as the shutter is pressed.White balance features are excellent in this camera ranging from auto to 3000k all the way up to 7500k in addition to 4 spaces for custom settings (nice job Olympus).Full AF or manual focus modes as well as several combinations of the two! Flash: the E-300 probably has the best on board flash of any camera I have ever used, and without a doubt the most versitile as far as being able to control intensity, speed, etc. I actually like using it (Normally I hate flash photography). Huge selection of Image formats: this camera will save your pictures in at least 20 different files types and resolutions, not to mention you can completely edit Raw image files directly within the camera! Exsposure, contrast, sharpness the whole deal right on board. Battery life is excellent being as good as my F-828 at 230-220 minutes.Micro-drive capable, and I absolutely love the Zuiko lenses.I have to admit I never thought I would own an Olympus let alone one of thier SLRs, Olympus has a tendency to cut on quality when it comes to thier lower end models the people that own em love em. However I have always heard that Olympus high end cameras are among the best. After using the E-300 I would agree WOW!.This camera has so many other benifits and features that I can’t go into here, so check your online review sources and make up your own mind. As I said I am a professional photographer and I sell cameras and aside from some bells and whistles, speed you’ll never use, the E-300 is everybit as good a digital SLR camera as its Canon and Nikon counterparts (more so in some ways)The biggest being price!
I added another lens to mine and a Microdrive (4gb) and a Canon would have still cost me more, and I’d still be lost in those menus!Want my advice? Put the E-300 on your short list and decide based on picture and price, not speed. Weather its film or digital, photography has always been about the pictures, SLR’s by nature take amazing photographs, is it really worth it to have to take on a second job just to pay for it!? I hope this helps somewhat, after I have used the camera a while I may offer an update, until then Happy shooting!
Excellent value for money
Before buying the Evolt 300, I read numerous reviews on it and D-SLR cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sigma and Fujifilm with similar features.
Bottom line consensus: The Evolt 300 is a technically sound and accomplished D-SLR which delivers quality photographs comparable to the Nikon D70 and superior to the Canon Digital Rebel XT.
So far, so good.
I then visited various dealers–from dedicated photoshops to Best Buy and Circut City–so that I could see and handle each of the cameras in my price / feature range: ~$800 to ~$1400, 6+ megapixels, decent selection of lenses. (I purchased the camera @ Adorama Camera via Amazon).
Unlike the similarly priced Nikon D50 and the Canon XT, the Evolt 300 does not feel or handle like a cheap plastic toy. Score 1. if I’m spending a considerable amount of money on a D-SLR, I want a certain degree of ruggedness. This is a well-made camera.
I narrowed my choices down to the Nikon D70, the Evolt 300 and the Canon EOS 20D. If money were no object, I’d say buy the Canon EOS 20D.
Likewise, the Nikon D70 makes good sense if you have compatible Nikon lenses. But otherwise it simply doesn’t outperform the Evolt 300 to justify the cost difference.
I went with the Evolt 300 with the dual Zuiko lenses. (The package listed above). Even with the FL-36 Flash and extra battery, I still kept the entire package price under $1000.
I’ve been using the camera consistently for the past two months since relocating to Senegal. No problems.
If I can take the word of others, the photos –not in terms of art but image quality– are outstanding.
I generally shot in RAW and can go through 4+ gigs before worrying about the battery. To date, I’ve used most of the programmable features–including autobracketing for exposure and white balance. All work as advertised. Likewise, the different scence modes also very good. (One exception noted below).
Three compliants, the last minor.
1. Although this camera does allow both manual focus and auto focus with manual fine-tuning, the Zuiko lenses simply don’t respond well to manual focus. For certain macro shots (those with tricky backgrounds), you have play around a good bit just to get the subject in focus. Dialing to manual and handtuning — which should solve the problem– almost a waste of time.
2. Olympus has it’s own version of RAW– .orf. ORF requires a plugin for Photoshop 7 and lower (I don’t know about Photoshp CS). Although RAW offers great editing options, the ORF version is a pain to work with, loads much slower, and can’t be previewed except by using Olympus Master software. Given the amount of photos I shot, ORF has added hours of processing time over what the standard RAW files would. This I’m less than thrilled with.
3. You’ll either love or hate the sunset mode. I really don’t care for the way it turns the horizon Martian orange. I want the deep blues, reds and purples that I see — and not bad postcard melodrama. When I now shoot sunsets or oceanscapes at dusk, I do so NOT using the sunset mode.
Bottom line:
No regrets whatsoever about this purchase. I am very happy with my Evolt 300 which has already seen a great deal of use under less than ideal conditions. The camera is technically solid, easy-to-use, and comes with many strong basic and advanced features. Just excellent value for price. So far, great fun too.
