VIDEO & AUDIO:
For the most allotment, there is of course animation differences with one being conventional for a Universal Studios Japan skedaddle in Japan, one that is shapely deformed format and another that actually looks quite cold with its blooming backgrounds and vibrant colors. The video is featured in 4:3 standard definition.
The audio is featured in English 5.1 Surround Sound and Japanese Stereo. The majority of the action sequences can be heard in the interactive account but dialogue and music comes quite determined through your front channel speakers and center channel.

When it comes to a well-liked series such as “Fullmetal Alchemist” and other accepted long-running series, these OVA’s are typically for the fans of the arresting series and/or the exclaim talent. You either pick up a solid half hour of a storyline (that may or may not describe to the anime series) or an OVA that puts your accepted characters in a new residence that may be fat of humor and all-out fun! The latter is indeed the case for the “FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: PREMIUM OVA COLLECTION”.
For the interactive segment, it may be hard to imagine a scuttle with video (for those who never experienced it) but with my experience of riding a few in Japan, I can say it’s comparable for those who have attended such trot at Disneyland or Disney World, where you are shifted around through a dawdle (that is not like a rollercoaster but its constantly appealing) while watching a storyline progress.
I could imagine after watching the Interactive Experience of how frigid this straggle may have been. For the most piece, the interactive experience was quite fun to witness and observe everyone together in battle. Not being piece of the traipse and watching it on DVD is composed fun and delectable but I could only imagine how the interactive breeze could have been during the action sequences.
For the inviting shorts, fans of the anime series and film will definitely acquire these three shorts quite exquisite and funny. They are short in duration but for the most fragment, my current would have to be “Kids” which has an ending that may surprise fans.
Overall, “FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: PREMIUM OVA COLLECTION” is a fun, palatable and satisfying collection of shorts. It’s also noteworthy more delicious lustrous that retail stores are selling this for $10-$14, so it is quite affordable. If you are a gargantuan fan of the anime series, this DVD deserves to be allotment of your “Fullmetal Alchemist” collection!
It’s tough to argue with the widespread adoration that developed from seemingly thin air (lame pun, I know) over Stout Metal Alchemist. In a sense, I’ve often viewed the franchise as a bit of an Asian/ anime counterpart to the hysteria over Harry Potter we’ve endured here in the States. And while I haven’t considered myself a dedicated fan of the series per say, I have enjoyed its fresh premise and solid presentation in each encounter I’ve had thus far. Enter Beefy Metal Alchemist, Premium OVA Collection from Funimation. Based on the title alone, I really expected this release to be the definitive OVA collection of the franchise but with a total runtime of impartial over a half hour, something didn’t feel quite just about that theory. But before I acquire ahead of myself, let’s talk a bit about the frosty hard facts.
Released across a single disc packaged within a standard dvd case, Chubby Metal Alchemist Premium OVA Collection comes in at a total runtime of 35 minutes and wears an appropriate TV PG (13+) rating.
Language options are of typical sub & dub variety meaning the choice of fresh Japanese dialog audio presented in stereo or an English dub track in Dolby Digital 5.1, and the option of running English subtitles within either.
Typically at this point of my anime reviews, I would assume a moment to focus on the extras contained within but to be completely just, this entire disc is essentially a collection of extras in and of itself; so let me buy the easy arrangement out by following the press release in saying that extras include recent TV commercials, textless closing song, and some Funimation trailers.
That said, the “feature” here actually consists of four snips of Chunky Metal Alchemist that could, realistically, have been packaged as extras on any one of the series or prior OVA releases if for nothing else, due to the fact that all of them together only equal a half hour of entertainment. I will atomize the four pieces down in the order in which they are presented on the menu:
1) The Interactive Experience
This piece of the DVD consists of six puny lecture segments (a pre-show, zones 1-4, then a post-show) that basically find the viewer up to hurry on the Plump Metal Alchemist universe by addressing the viewer directly. The goal of this come, presumably, was to emulate the feeling of military briefings but long-standing fans of the prove will certainly be disappointed in the simple and lackluster recapping contained here. Calling the experience “interactive” is certainly a bit of a stretch but in this segment’s defense, at least some of the humor works pleasing well.
2) The Live Action Featurette
Great potential lost to time restraints and queer presentation. This segment is exactly what it sounds like; a live action runt film where a character from the indicate attempts to visit Bones studio for answers on the meaning of his existence. Determined it sounds cold but the fact that it’s only about two minutes long really cuts down on the storytelling element. Fans will be left wanting more and non-fans of the series that happen to be in the room will notice at you as if you’ve lost your mind (which, may or may not be the precise case) . Either contrivance, everyone is obvious to be disappointed.
3) Chibi Wrap Party (Short)
This segment is classified as a short and that’s unprejudiced what it is. It’s a completely arresting Pudgy Metal Alchemist entry of the slightly clean deformed (SD) variety with decent sing work in both the recent Japanese dialog and the English dub. If I could have had any input on this entire project, I would definitely have tried to pick up more of this stuff just here.
4) Kids (Short)
Finally we have another provocative short- this time literally about three minutes long in which the year 2005 witnesses Edward Elric’s 100th birthday party. There isn’t great dialog here in either language option (then again the runtime would only allow for a sentence or two anyway) but the artwork here more closely resembles that of the modern FMA series (sharp away from the neat deformed glimpse of Chibi Wrap Party) with graceful skies and rich textures. Again, the biggest flaw is that it’s short- too short in fact for anyone who happens to collect themselves without a unpleasant case of ADD.
In all, this will surely be a primary tiny collector’s part to diehard Stout Metal fans who’ve been awaiting an official Residence 1 release of these nearly legendary Japanese segments but the rest of the anime community at stout will likely regain itsy-bitsy redeeming quality about a release (especially one called the Premium OVA Collection) that is barely a half hour long. Preserve in mind that a capable part of the total 35 minutes from open to conclude is a simple recap up to unique events and the fact becomes painfully determined that this collection will likely slay up only on the wish-list of the hardcore FMA fan who seeks every single release.

Purists beware, Roman Polanski and Kenneth Tynan have gash, rearranged, and shaped Shakespeare’s material to earn a MOVIE! And what a substantial film they created. Flowingly cinematic, with pleasing status filming and expedient cinematography the many cuts allow for a unexcited narration without sacrificing the gut and heart of the play.
There was considerable controversy when this film debuted, probably due to it being financed and produced by Hugh Hefner and Playboy, and probably because it was unblinkingly bloody upfront (although the blood is in the play, great of it is naturally offstage), and because of nudity in several key scenes (including the witches….all those extinct nude crones, while factually suitable, no doubt upset many) . Today, these seem like perfectly reasonable choices. The film is relentless and remorseless, as befits the fable. I don’t know what piece of Polanski’s personal tragedy had any fragment in his work here, but the direction is qualified. Finch and Anis are beautiful as the murderous Laird and his Lady, as is the rest of the cast.
If you want the play, peruse the play. If you want a stimulating and fully realized CINEMATIC treatment of Shakespeare’s grand themes of greed, ambition, abolish, guilt and destiny, inspect this finely produced, directed, and acted work. Well worthwhile.
Please ignore the poorly conception out review on this page. Anyone with either a passing interest in Shakespeare or an appreciation of film should survey this out now. Polanski, avoiding the trap so many other filmmakers tumble into, makes a film based on Macbeth, not merely recording a performance of the play. He has crafted a breathlessly paced film, making very reasonable cuts in the text in order to bring the film in under 2½ hours. I have seen considerable longer versions that had no purchase of the play at all.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Macbeth! Click Here
Polanski also wisely chose not to exhaust renowned stars for the major roles; instead utilizing some of the best (and youngest) British stage actors of the time. Jon Finch and Francesca Annis perfectly seize the most emotionally wrenched marriage ever, without the moustache twirling that finds its diagram into Shakespeare film adaptations too often. This film is shaded, muddy, and violent; it is not intended for children. I have to acquire that the people who complain about the violence in the film have never actually read the play. And I hope, for the sake of their fill sanity, they steer certain of Titus Andronicus, Richard III, Julius Caesar, Othello, and if beheadings keep a bee in your bonnet, beware Cymbeline!
… This is a raw, passionate telling of one of the gargantuan fictional works in the English language, by one of the broad filmmakers of our time. But wait for the wide-screen DVD.

It shouldn’t be bought, not because is terrible but because is heavily censored – some 30 min missing – and because those people they beleive they have the lawful to treat the customer like an ignorant and immature child should retract a message. It is offending to our intelingence and dignity to be supervised by an invisible censor who desides before us, for us what is great to watch and what is not. Myself i don’t collect to be treated like that and i benefit everybody to avoid buying censored products as offencive to our intelingence and that of the creator artist. Is a phaenomenon that should be eliminated and it will be if our behaviour as customers is sensitive. Apart from that is of a dinky importance if the film is fine or not. Yes it is! so what?

Having explored familiar heterosexual obsessions in well-regarded softcore dramas like CAMILLE 2000 (1969) and THE LICKERISH QUARTET (1969), director Radley Metzger upped the sexual ante with Secure, a good-natured bisexual romp which crosses the boundary into hardcore territory, recently poularized in US theaters by the likes of DEEP THROAT and THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES (both 1972) . Based on a play by screenwriter Jerry Douglas, Gather tells the legend of swinging couple Claire Wilbur and Gerald Grant, who originate a bet that they can seduce freshly-scrubbed newlyweds Lynn Lowry and Calvin Culver during a weekend get-together at their luxury Riviera villa. Having plied the hapless duo with drink nd soft drugs (“I’m not a very pleasant junkie!” Lowry complains) and dressed them in costumes which tally with their sexual fantasies (cowboy, nun, sailor, etc.), Wilbur and Lowry pair off for a lesbian encounter, while Grant and Culver plunge into the basement bedroom for a full-blown gratified seduction.
Artfully photographed by Metzger himself and former cinematographer Franjo Vodopivec on residence in Yugosalvia, and framed as an adult fairy epic (the luscious opening narration locates the action “…in the lush itsy-bitsy land of Plenty, in the enviable region of Affluence… deep within the Erogenous Zone”!), the movie is eminent by clever dialogue which removes passe notions of sexual parameters from the outset. When asked how she differentiates between sexes during the orgies she’s attended in the past, Wilbur replies: “First you don’t know, then you can’t dispute, then you don’t care!”
The spot is wafer-thin, and the acting is merely OK (the women fare best in this regard), but Douglas’ script – played out for the most fragment in a single interior region, with only a handful of outdoor sequences – allows Metzger to form slowly and surely to the climactic double seduction, using reflective surfaces (amongst other devices) to notify sexual dualities within the characters. Viewers hoping for a non-stop flesh-fest may be irritated by the long story preamble (punctuated by Wilbur’s rough-house drop with studly repairman Carl Parker), but there’s unexcited plenty of uncompromising nudity, and the film manages to stimulate the brain whilst simultaneously tickling your, er… esteem. Spacious music, too, including an ultra-groovy (and uncredited) theme song!
Unfortunately, the most widely-circulated print – which bears a 1976 copyright – is the softcore version. Metzger reportedly prefers this slice of the film, but the all-important sex scenes are seriously compromised by jarring edits and certain gaps in the soundtrack. The film remains a worthwhile curio, but its erotic potency has been severely blunted by unnecessary censorship.
Fascinating trivia: ‘Calvin Culver’ is actually satisfied porn star Casey Donovan, who made his name in groundbreaking titles like BOYS IN THE SAND (1971) and THE OTHER SIDE OF ASPEN (1978), though he later re-temaed with Metzger for the director’s hardcore masterpiece THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN (1976) . Co-star Gerald Grant only appeared in two other films (Metzger’s NAKED CAME THE STRANGER [1975] and Umberto Lenzi’s EATEN ALIVE [1980]), and it’s dusky to recount that both he and Donovan have since passed away. Claire Wilbur featured in the current stage version of Salvage, but her only other hide acting credit appears to be TEENAGE HITCH-HIKERS (1974), while the glorious Lynn Lowry has since pursued a career in mainstream movies, including THE CRAZIES (1973), SHIVERS (1975) and CAT PEOPLE (1982) . Writer Jerry Douglas adopted the pseudonym ‘Doug Richards’ and made a name for himself in jubilant porn, writing and directing a number of famous productions, including THE Succor ROW (1973), BOTH WAYS (1976) and MORE OF A MAN (1991), the latter featuring Joey Stefano and Chi Chi LaRue, while SCORE’s production manager Branko Lustig has since become a major Hollywood producer, with titles like SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993) and GLADIATOR (2000) to his credit!

I will not spoil but I will say this demonstrate is now falling into history. It’s one of the greatest shows of all time and will most likely only gain better from here.
HBO & Showtime passed on this view — everybody except AMC.
The fresh meth epidemic started as “crank” which bikers kept in their crank case and which helped them pause awake, and it was also customary by truckers. I actually took some when I was hitchhiking across the country one time and riding with truckers and didn’t judge anything about it. It did not make euphoria, objective inability to sleep. Also soldiers in the blitzkrieg style of war extinct it, so Hitler et al. idea it was God’s gift.

Now there’s nothing agreeable about amphetamines. We might as well have the return of smallpox. (I read somewhere that 30% of smallpox victims who survived were blind. In addition to all the ugliness of death and disfiguration.)
So the creators of this indicate evidently said, What should we juxtapose with the ugliness of meth? How about a person whom the viewers identify with because he’s like Manuel on “Fawlty Towers” — John Cleese said in an interview that the character the viewers identify with most is Manuel and the character they study as having the least control is also Manuel. (Character they perceived as having the most control was Sybil Fawlty, and also they liked her the least.) The dad in the movie “Parenthood” (Steve Martin’s character) said, “My whole life is ‘hafta.’” That kind of character.
So this is what you have. The lead character is a high school teacher, works part-time at a car wash, is pushed around by his wife and boss and treated with no respect by his extended family, has no respect for himself and in general “has given up on life” according to the show’s creator, and then on top of that he gets terminal cancer. On the one hand you want him to be cured and to recede away and have a job and family whom he actually loves, and for decades wake up in the morning saying, “I am so glad! Why am I so lucky? ” And on the other hand, this person is about as immoral as anyone could be, because he decides to get crystal meth.
The creator of the note, Vince Gilligan, actually said they found the actor Bryan Cranston when they were doing a memoir on “X-Files” and said who can we glean whom the audience will calm like after he does all these dastardly things. He said they auditioned a lot of actors, but Bryan Cranston was a revelation.
So the lead character decides to cook meth because he is going to die in a year or two anyway and he wants to accept hundreds of thousands of dollars for his family. His wife is pregnant and he wants her to pause home with the baby. She had a gross salary when she did work, as a bookkeeper. They also have a teenager. He has cerebral palsy and needs to go to college and acquire a job where he works with his mind. He is always going to need a lot of money for medical care and special equipment.
Also the lead character is willing to try a treatment for his inoperable, terminal cancer which his wife finds for him, but it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars which his insurance will not pay for.
A warning: some people would not judge watching this prove because it’s all drugs and violence. But to me, it’s about as dramatic as you can procure. The meth epidemic is about as welcome as the Shadowy Plague dropping by for a visit in the Middle Ages. But on the other hand, you really want this character to sprint and have a jubilant ending.

“Oh! What a Sparkling War” takes on nothing less than the large task of encapsulating the entirety of World War One into two and a half hours. This is a account of courage and sacrifice beyond comprehension, and of stupidity and heartlessness on a truly monumental scale. But the courage and sacrifice are not, as in the usual telling of tales, that of a handful of heroes, but of an entire generation. And the stupidity and heartlessness belong to the military and world leaders of the day. As monarchs, generals, and politicians wallow in luxury and privilege, the ordinary soldier wallows in mud – and brutal death. This is a myth that will design you gasp and roar `never again.’ And you know your weep is in vain.

A search for after the opening cover credits states something that must be kept in mind throughout the film: “The indispensable statements made by the historical characters in this film are based on documentary evidence, and the words of the songs are those sung by the troops during the First World War.” Therefore, to underscore the absurdity of an international disaster that did its utmost to assassinate an entire generation, worthy of the dialogue of the historical characters, comfortably ensconced away from the fighting, sounds absurd. Is it really possible, for example, that General Haig, after considering the big loss of life on both sides, could have said something like “in the demolish, the Germans will have five thousand men and we will have ten thousand, so we will have won”? . Apparently so.
The men in the trenches, on the other hand, had the unenviable choice of facing probable death or mutilation on the battlefield, or facing the firing squad for cowardice if they deserted. They boom themselves in the memorable songs of the day, many of which are rich in gallows humor (“hanging on the obsolete barbed wire” is one pleased refrain) . But despite its ugly themes, there is not one topple of blood in the film: when death comes, it arrives in the design of a quick-witted red poppy.

Those who cannot represent to epochal events except through the eyes of a circumscribed station of characters may have distress with this film. And some may get frivolous a film that depicts human tragedy through upbeat song and dance numbers (all of which are wonderfully staged and performed) . But rob that the words sung are those of the true participants in the unfolding tragedy. “We’re here because we’re here because we’re here” underscores the troops’ thought of the meaningless sacrifice. If their impious words space to beloved hymns seem offensive, perhaps it is because when life is at its bleakest, humor can aid establish one’s sanity.
This film, directed by the immense Richard Attenborough, is a work of genius; it delivers a message that is all-too-relevant for our times.
I first saw this film on the great shroud in London when it was first released. I have been waiting for this film to appear on any video format for years. I can only hope that this is not the edited version. Shown on television only rarely and severely edited the film loses its sarcastic wit and anti-war feelings.
The very conception of setting a musical retelling of the WWI, from the English point of concept, on Brighton Pier’s Fun Heavenly is valiant to say the least. “England Attach the Kibasch on the Kaiser” truly begins the fun and shock. Maggie Smith’s appearance as a Music Hall star is astonishing as she exhorts the troops to mark up. All of the songs, excepting the title one are from the era and provide enough feeling to swamp your feelings. Hooray! I shall expend it in class Winter Quarter. It will be a revelation to those who have not seen it!

Bob Hope’s 1948 film “The Paleface,” was the highest-grossing movie America’s most-beloved comedian of the era ever made. Pairing Hope with Jane Russell in a run-of-the-mill Paramount comedy was box office magic that level-headed works today. Here Bob Hope’s timing is perfect, and he’s totally mastered the character we associate with him, that cowardly braggart, who thinks of himself as a trusty Casanova. The film detached holds up well, and I’ve found myself laughing out loud at many of the scenes. The DVD has an unbelievably valid transfer that gives you a narrate that’s so crisp, it feels like you have a camera in your hands. Special features are nice, including the current theatrical trailer. There’s also a clip of an Armed Forces Mutter Performance, and some footage of Bob Hope performing for the troops. With DVD-ROM, you can also compare the script to the scene as it plays out. In all, an luscious blueprint to exercise an evening with one of the titanic comedians of the mid-20th century.
This is one of the best Bob Hope movies, and his comedy timing here is honorable. He plays Painless Potter, a cowardly dentist, and the problems he encounters provides Hope enormous opportunity to improvise perceive gags and many other memorable jokes. Pay terminate attention when Bob attempts to extract a tooth… it’s a classic scene! Hope is curiously underrated as a humorous, but he was an absolute master at this genre, playing to perfection a sort of bumbling wannabe womanizing coward. Pay particular attention to his timing, which was absolutely unmatched in Hollywood.
The only drawback is Jane Russell, who was only in movies due to her cleavage. Her acting talent is minimal, but the knowing Hope more than makes up for it. You will bag yourself laughing out loud continuously throughout this movie. The color tones are shiny, crisp and acquire it seem like you’re sitting in the movie theatre in 1948. A classic comedy film.

Turn on your TV. Eye the same formulaic comedies day after day on the networks. Leer your intelligence quotient start its downward spiral. Horrified? Ok, now turn on Scrubs. Every so often a expose comes along that breaks the network formula, and brings a richness to a genre that is sorely lacking in originality. Scrubs is that prove, and has been for several years running.

Scrubs twisted me with the very first episode I ever saw. At first I was skeptical. Medical comedy, hmm Ok, there is going to be terrible sophmoric humor and haven’t we seen medical shows about a million times? Five minutes in, it hit me. This display was actually brilliant; Shiny, quirky, and sometimes wacky humor coupled with precise drama and tearful emotion and writing that continues to amaze week after week. At that moment, Scrubs inherited the void left by Seinfeld’s departure as TVs best comedy.
The quirky nature of the writing, especially JD’s fantasy sequences, improves in Season 2. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are far better, and far more comfortable, in their respective roles as JD, Turk, and Elliot than in Season 1. John C. McGinley is bar none the best actor on TV today as Dr. Cox. He becomes a more understandable and likeable character as this season progresses. And of course, Neil Flynn and his fantastically offbeat humor as JD’s Janitor nemesis.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Scrubs – The Complete Second Season! Click Here
The season 1 finale left a lot of questions in the air. Would Carla and Turk settle their problems and gain happiness? Would JD and Elliot topple in like for proper or are they destined for friendship? Most importantly, woud the father-son relationship between JD and Dr. Cox ever be the same? Season 2 resolves these questions fairly early, leaving the majority of the season devoted to pure laugh out loud moments and wonderful guest stars like Heather Locklear, Tom Cavanaugh, Rick Shroeder, Jay Mohr, and the exquisite Amy Intelligent as Tasty Coma Wife. The prove seems to be successfully animated away from the gimmicky status twists and each episode is a neatly comprehensive demonstrate. With shorter dramatic arcs, the humor and acting are center stage and the cast and crew sparkle. This region is a solid winner, with plenty of enchanting extras, and is an absolute must have for any Scrubs or TV comedy fan.
Scrubs season two came out on DVD where I live yesterday (Australia) and I have to say that the quality of this box spot actually managaes to surpass that of season one. Once again, the special features are titillating and informative without being too lengthy (perfect for my short attention span) . The best short doco is one which features many of the on-set jokes between cast and crew – you really net the feeling that these people don’t fair turn up and originate a sitcom for the money.
While it’s disappointing that there are only 22 episodes in season two, as opposed to the 24 from the first season, what is lost in quality is made up for in quantity. Once again we stare the janitor (my absolute favourite character) do his best to build JD’s life hell, while getting choked up when JD gives him a recent mop (of all things!) . Music also features heavily in these episodes, with the return of ‘Ted’s Band’ seeing a improbable rendition of the theme song from ‘Charles in Charge’. Check out the extras to behold these guys do their beget special cloak of the Scrubs theme song.
Even the menus are spirited – containing the entire Scrubs theme song, which is seriously catchy (sings) …but I know, I’m no Superman… (all correct I’ll finish now) . In the episodes themselves, the record is very sure and the sound is tremendous too, and marvelous transfer from the source material. Considering the poor pattern in which these shows screened in Australia, it’s nice to be able to peer them in order as intended. All in all, this is a improbable station at a titanic sign – where I’m from it’s about half the cost of (for example) Simpsons and Frasier box sets. And because Scrubs is honest one of those shows you can leer over and over again, it’s well worth every cent.

Although this season has some marvelous episodes, and overall is a five star season, we launch to spy the commence of some of the trends that eventually becomes the downfall of the series.
“A Stash From the Past” is one of the best episodes of the season. The scene with Jackie, Roseanne, and Dan all in the bathroom together is worth the brand of admission alone. Also, the Halloween episode from this season is one of the better ones, with Darlene and David pretending to be broken up and seeing other people. Roseanne finally gets bested by a Halloween prank when she walks in on what appears to be Darlene in the aftermath of having brutally murdered David’s unusual beau. “Homeward Jog” is also obedient with D.J. having taken up a original hobby – one that has him tying up the bathroom for excessive periods of time. Dan has a man-to-man chat with D.J. to let him know that what he is going through is typical for a boy his age, when D.J. decides to start a volley of questions at Dan about his recent hobby. A very discouraged Dan informs D.J. that although this is something that everyone does, it is also not something that people talk about.
“The Driver’s Seat” finally goes into more needed detail about Roseanne’s horrified childhood. D.J. steals the family car, and when he is found out, Roseanne reacts by spanking him in front of Dan and Jackie. Her remorse is substantial, and in probably the best scene between her and D.J. of the entire series, she tells him how sorry she is and how she was hit as a child. In the background, Leon has been adding to Roseanne’s stress by trumping her in decision making over at the diner. Leon harm up a partner in the diner earlier in the season in “The Mommy’s Curse” when Bev sold her shares to Leon to gather attend at Roseanne for telling her how her opinions really weren’t appreciated at the diner.
On a similar theme, we learn more about Dan’s childhood. In fact, Dan learns more about Dan’s childhood in “Lies My Father Told Me”. Up to now, we had been led to gain that Dan’s father, played by the fabulous Ned Beatty, was a somewhat selfish guy, a bit of a buffoon, and a man who enjoyed his life of traveling salesman to the point that he didn’t care too noteworthy about the impact it had on his family. In this episode, Dan’s mother goes to a mental hospital, and Dan blames this all on his father, gets drunk, and goes over to his father and Crystal’s home slinging accusations, but Dan’s father is not home. Roseanne retrieves Dan, and when he sobers up she tells him the truth about his mother, how she had mental problems even before she married Dan’s father. Dan breaks down crying, having an impossible time of reconciling a lifetime of concept with the accurate truth – that his Dad took Dan’s disdain all of these years so Dan would have no unpleasant feelings toward his mother. Dan goes attend to his father’s house to patch things up, and fixing a toaster together and watching a football game, you fetch the feeling that Dan may be seeing his dad through different eyes for the first time and maybe this is the beginning of them mending fences. It was a truly tremendous episode.
One of the better long arcs of the season involves Darlene hiding the fact that David is with her in Chicago, rather than in Michigan with his mother. Although it isn’t stressed, I believe one of the sadder scenes challenging David and Darlene is in “Thanksgiving 93″ where the Conner holiday turns out to be a inconvenience. David and Darlene are in Darlene’s spartan college apartment dining on macaroni and cheese when David asks Darlene if she misses being home for Thanksgiving, and she says “not really” in a very deadpan map. This brings reality to the proverb “Better is a dinner of herbs where fancy is than a stalled ox and hatred therewith”, given the sizable fight that is taking dwelling serve at the Conner home.
Now for the parts of the season that are not so gigantic. It seems that this is the beginning of a trend in “Roseanne” where men tend to be disposable. For one, Jackie becomes pregnant via a one-night stand with one of Dan’s coworkers – “Fred”. Throughout the next two seasons in which Fred appears, the reveal doesn’t bother to give him a background of any kind such as a family or even a last name. He seems to exist simply to give Jackie a child, to develop that child legitimate via a brief-as-possible marriage, and then exit Jackie’s life forever at the kill of season seven because Jackie says so. Also, in seasons three and four, Tag Healey, now Becky’s husband, was quite the rebel with obvious ideas about everything, and frequent clashes between himself and Roseanne. When Effect and Becky return home this season, Heed has been neutered for all intents and purposes. When Roseanne discovers all is not well in their marriage, Roseanne’s first instinct is to collect Becky to eject Imprint, although she later retreats from that area. When in previous seasons he was pictured as a stunning able mechanic, this season Impress isn’t even able to manufacture passing grades in trade school, and can only acquire a job when Dan gives him one at the city garage.
There is also the entry of ideas and themes in the Conner household that working-class people simply unbiased don’t do on a titanic scale. For instance, it is ludicrous to believe that with two grown children- one of which is in college- and the third and youngest child in adolescence that two people who have had to work so hard honest to retain their heads above water all their adult lives would entertain having a fourth child. At this stage of life – their early forties – the Conners would likely cheer the fact that their aging bones do not have to work quite so hard unprejudiced to assign food on the table and want to relax a bit. Their decision for a midlife-child is more typical of the 40-something occupants of the upper west side of Manhattan than small-town Illinois.
In summary, season six is a very obedient season when grouped with the previous five. When grouped with the last three, season six is unprejudiced the beginning of the kill. In fact, I judge that “Roseanne” would be better remembered if it had ended with this season and Jackie’s wedding to Fred. The problems that start to stir up in the expose in this season would not seem so big if they hadn’t had three more seasons to grow to fruition and ultimately into fat blown anguish.
